Which MIDI Keyboard Controllers & Computer DJ Controllers Will Fit Into the Big Namba Studio Backpack?

The Ultimate Musician or DJ BackpackAs the Namba Gear designers were doing their research on the ultimate perfect size for the Big Namba Studio Backpack, they were also keeping in mind the current carry-on size restrictions of the airline industry. Although there is a standard, which is 22″ x 14″ x 9″ or 45″ total, every airline has their own size restrictions which can sometimes vary even within a single airline depending on the size of aircraft or the attitude of the check-in agent.

So we had to look at both the exterior size of the backpack as well as try to maximise the interior space to include the largest number of controllers. M-Audio’s Axiom25 was chosen as the measuring stick, because we knew that if we could get this “big boy” to fit and still follow the airline restrictions that we would be in good shape with most of the controllers on the market.

This lead to the development of the unhinging side on the large compartment, so that the backpack could open 180 degrees and the controller could actually be packed into a flat case.

Unfortunately, that did leave a few controllers unprotected and stranded on the sidewalk because they were just too big to fit our criteria for us to recommend them for the Big Namba.

The Korg25 is listed at 19.25″ inches long and although it is only .25″ longer than the Big Namba Studio Backpack’s interior dimension, it stretches the bag uncomfortably. The Novation XioSynth 25 which has on-board sounds as well as being a MIDI controller is a little wide at 12.54″. Likewise, the Stanton CM.205/CM.203 dj controllers are just a little fat at 4.29″ depth to recommend packing alongside your laptop. These Korg, Novation & Stanton controllers can be made to fit, just not with our recommendation considering the bag design. The Yamaha KX-25 at just under 20″ long and the Korg MicroX at 23.86″ long will not fit; don’t even try.

So what controllers do fit inside a Big Namba Studio Backpack?

KEYBOARD CONTROLLERS

Axiom25 in the Big NambaAlesis PhotonX25
Behringer UMA25S
Behringer UMX25
Edirol PCR-M1
Emu Xboard25
M-Audio Oxygen8
M-Audio MidAir25
M-Audio KeyRig25
M-Audio Axiom25
Novation SL25
Novation ReMote LE x25

DJ CONTROLLERS

Behringer BCD3000DJ
Feena
Kontrol KDJ500
M-Audio Xponent
Vestex VCI-100
Vestex VCI-300

Alternative Controllers

Akai MPD16
M-Audio Trigger Finger
M-Audio XSession Pro
Korg PadKontrol

The result is a backpack that will accommodate a majority of controllers and should still fit in the overhead compartment of most airlines, bearing in mind that each airline can change their minds about size restrictions and some smaller planes will simply not accommodate anything much bigger that a construction worker’s lunchbox. Sorry about having to include the caveat, but it is true.

So what did we miss? If you have a question about whether a particular controller will fit inside a Big Namba Studio Backpack and it is not on the list, please comment and let us know so that we can investigate.

Buffer Stoker from Melbourne, Australia wrote in on our MySpace page, http://www.myspace.com/nambagear, to ask if the Big Namba would also hold the Novation SL25.

The answer is YES, the Novation SL25 fits perfectly inside the Big Namba Studio Backpack!

  2. Alexandros Chrysidis says:

I’m really struggling to get a backpack from anywhere in the world that would fit the Axiom 25 and a 17inch laptop. Your backpack seems to fit the Axiom 25, but no room for a laptop? And I really don’t care about airlines, I just want a way to travel my mobile studio with my motorbike on my back , thats all!

  3. Woody says:

Alexandros, the specifications of the Big Namba specifically state that it will hold both a 17″ laptop computer as well as a MIDI controller as large as the Axiom25. It works! Check out the video to see an Axiom25 and laptop packed together.

A side benefit of the Big Namba design is that the shape is very aerodynamic, which will come in handy on your motorbike (don’t forget to use the chest strap). You may order your Big Namba with confidence.

  4. djsrulez says:

will the Namba studio hold the upcoming Vestax VCM 600 Midi Controller???…if so im getting your bag =)

    Thanks

  5. Woody says:

We contacted our #1 DJ products source, http://www.DJDeals.com, to get the specs and see if they had an answer for you. The bottom line… it’s tight.

An Axiom25 fits the Big Namba perfectly (18.8” x 11.2” x 2.6”), the Novation Xio25 is shorter but wider than the Axiom25 and will also fit (18.4” x 12.5” x 2.7”). But the VCM 600 is a hair longer and almost as wide as the Xio although not as deep (18.9” x 12.2” x 1.6”).

So until we try it for ourselves or get a definitive answer from another source, we must put out the “caution flag.” We’ll be going to the NAMM show in Anaheim, CA in just a few weeks and we’ll stop by the Vestax booth and confirm whether or not it is a good fit. Until then, if someone can confirm if the VCM600 will fit into the Big Namba Studio Backpack, please comment.

  6. Woody says:

Just in case you missed it, we checked out the new Vestax VCM600 at the NAMM show and it fits! You can read the entire report at https://nambagear.com/2009/01/22/namba-gears-2009-namm-show-roundup/

Here is the excerpt from our NAMM show report:

“We had been asked to find out if the new Vestax VCM 600 DJ controller would fit inside the Big Namba Studio Backpack, so we went on an expedition to find out. The answer is YES; because it is thin, we can angle it into the top of the controller compartment and it fits perfectly!”

  7. Does this bag protect if it rains?

  8. Woody says:

Josh, yes the Namba Gear products will certainly protect your contents if it rains, but we don’t claim that they are “weatherproof”. For instance, to label them “weatherproof” we would have had to cover the zippers with a flap of fabric to keep out rain from soaking through the zipper. This is the same annoying flap that always seems to get caught in the zipper on other bags.

Since Namba Gear products are not designed as hiking bags to protect against a downpour while you are on a 5 hour hike, we decided that we could do without the “weatherproof” label and left off that flap of fabric. So if you do take your mobile studio on a 5 hour hike through the mountains in the middle of a downpour, we would suggest that your cover your bag in a rain tarpe just to be safe.

  9. Tyler says:

How in the world will my buddies Xponent fit into this bag but they say I cannot fit my Xiosynth 25? I really wan’t this bag but I am not willing to give up the xiosynth for it.. If it falls under the category of “fits but not our recommendation considering the bag design”.. So does it stretch the bag, or is it in a spot where other things will be able to get to it without the bag protecting it? I don’t understand.

  10. Woody says:

    Hi Tyler,

We like the Xiosynth 25 too. We’ll give you the dimensions & facts and you will have to be the judge.

We know that it doesn’t seem like much, but your buddies Xponent is 1/2″ shorter, 1/2″ smaller width and a hair less depth. The interior compartment of the Big Namba is 12.50″ wide, but it narrows to about 12″ wide at the top of the bag. The Xponent is 12″ wide so it still fits just fine, but we are afraid that you will struggle a bit to get your 12.54″ wide Novation Xiosynth 25 to fit. What will happen will be that it will stretch the top of the backpack at the corners. We would not expect the 1680D Poly/Nylon material of the Big Namba to rip, but this will create a structural pressure point on your Xiosynth 25 should you accidently drop the backpack.

We take our job of protecting your controller & laptop seriously, hince our caveat that we don’t recommend the Big Namba for your Xiosynth 25. Can you make it fit? Yes.

  11. karl says:

Will it hold a 15″ laptop, and akai mpk25, and a native instrument maschine at the same time.

  12. Woody says:

Although we have not yet been able to put together both the MPK25 and Maschine to try this out personally; according to the Maschine’s posted dimensions of 12.6” x 11.6” x 2.4” it should fit perfectly in the forward compartment, while the MPK AND your laptop will fit in the back compartment.

  13. Lars says:

My question revolves around MPK25 and MacBook Pro 15. Are there any pictures that detail how the compartments are separated. The bags look beautiful and might tic all the boxes but was just curious about this one detail. Thanks

  14. champamoore says:

judging by the pictures you guys hae, you have failed to keep your list up to date.

seems it would be wise to add the akai and vestax ableton controllers i’ve seen comfortably placed within…

  15. bagginz says:

    Eh?

How can it fit a Novation REmote 25SL but not a Novation Xio?

You sure you have the names right?

Does it fit an Akai APC40?

    cheers,

  16. sheepstarr says:

Hi folks, could really do with one of these for my live setup.
will it fit a macbook pro 2007 model 17inch / apc40 / motu unltralite mk1 and all the power packs and leads?
If it does you got a sale.

    Merry Christmass

  17. luca says:

possible to fit akai apc40 + 15″ inch laptop + motu ultralite audo interface? thanks

  18. Woody says:

Hello Sheepstar and Luca, looks like you guys have a similar setup, with the exception of the size of the laptop. Yes, the Big Namba is perfect for both of your needs. Enjoy your Big Namba Studio Backpack!

  19. Mazz says:

It appears that the bag will fit a Novation SL MK2 25. Can you verify this for me? Thanks!

    Mazz

  20. Woody says:

Hi Mazz. Yes the Novation SL MKII25 fits great into the Big Namba Studio Backpack. Just like most of the larger footprint 25 keys, you will need to unlatch the hinges (velcro/snaps)and open the back compartment up all the way. Then insert one end of the kyb into the top of the bag and drop the other end into the bottom part. There you go.

    • Dan says:

I’ve had my Big Namba Studio Backpack for over two years and it has kept my Novation SL MKII25, Launchpad, Kensington Trackball, M-Audio Fast Track Pro, and cables organized and in perfect shape. The backpack is super comfortable to wear and very adjustable. I was initially hesitant because of the price, but once I received it, the value was apparent.
Now looking at another bag for Ableton Push, 15″ or 17″ Laptop and Focusite 2i4. May need another Big Namba!
Suggestion if NG is looking to suit folks asking for a weatherproof option: maybe NG could put out a cover for the Big Namba, as an additional purchase, like what I have for my camping backpack. Fits in a small pocket, but when I need it, I just pull it out and cover the pack. It has elastic edging to snugly hold it around the pack. It would blow off for the motorcycle rider, though!

  21. Belch says:

    Hey there,

Just wondering how I might get one of these amazing things in the UK??
I honestly haven’t come across anything even nearly as sturdy and spacious, and I’m itching to get my hands on one!

    Cheers!
    Matt

  22. Ryan says:

just wondering im a drummer could i fit a 14 by 8 inch snare drum in the main compartment??????

  23. Woody says:

    Hi Ryan,

We’re afraid that your snare will not fit into the Big Namba Studio Backpack, but it is an interesting idea to produce a bag like that. We’ll look into it. Thank you.

  24. Tran says:

Aight, here’s what I want to be carrying around with me at all times:
April 2010 Macbook Pro 15″ (should be the same size as all other 15.4″ MBP),
M-Audio Axiom Pro 25 (i’m not sure if it’s the same size as the axiom original),
Native Instruments Maschine 1.5, Monster Turbine Pro Copper Headphones.
Yes, I’ve read the post from karl about a year ago, but do you know for sure if all these will fit? Also, will all the knobs, sliders, pad, etc. be safe (back compartment and front compartment)? If so, this will be great for my setup.

  25. Tran says:

Also, should I just go and get the Lil Namba for this setup? Or will my Axiom Pro 25 not fit in the Lil Namba? I want my 15″ Macbook to be snug and I understand the Big Namba are designed for 17″ laptops.

  26. Woody says:

Hi Tran, the Axiom Pro25 has the same footprint as the original, and yes you need the Big Namba for all this gear. Don’t worry about your laptop fitting snug, it will be fine. As with the post to Karl, you will need to configure it with the Axiom Pro25 & Macbook 15″ in the back compartment and NI Maschine in the front.

  27. James says:

Hi will this fit a 17″ MBP + an AKAI APC40?

  28. Woody says:

Hi James, yes perfect fit for these two pieces in the rear compartment. You still have the front compartment for audio device, headphones, cables, hard drive, etc.

  29. Luc says:

Hi Woody, i was puzzled about the possibility to fit all of this in the namba bigpack:

    Native instruments Maschine
    + Dell Studio 17
    + MOTU MK3 Ultralite soundcard
+ Novation Remote SL 25 MKII
(+ Novation Launchpad => would be nice but optional )

Here are the dimensions of most of the gear for reference.
    -Dell studio 17 :
    Dimensions & Weight
    Width: 16.28″ (413.6mm)
    Height: 1.1″ (27.7mm) front / 1.54″ (39.0mm) back
    Depth: 11.04″ (280.6mm)

    -MOTU ultralite:
Chassis dimensions, excluding rack ears and front and back panel knobs and connectors: 9.5 x 7 x 1.75 inches (24.13 x 17.78 x 4.45 cm). Knobs and connectors extend up to 0.5 inch (1.27 cm) from front and back panels, adding 1 inch (2.54 cm) to depth

    -Novation remote SL25 MKII:
    Size (25 key): W=468mm, H=68mm, D=293mm

    -Native instruments maschine:
    Dimensions: (WxHxL) 12.6 11.6 x 2.4″ (320 x 295 x 60mm)

Hope that fits as i would love to get this bag.
    Thanks

  30. James says:

Great, Im guessing they wouldnt fit into the smaller remix pack?

Does anyone sell Namba in the UK? or do I have to mission it to the US?
    thanks

  31. Woody says:

    Hi Luc,

Wow! Yes, we are happy to report that all of your gear (including the Novation Launchpad) will fit inside the Big Namba Studio Backpack.

Put the SL25 & your 17″ laptop in the back compartment, Maschine, Launchpad & MK3 Ultralite in the front compartment. There’s still room for ac cables & p/s but that’s about all.

  32. Woody says:

    Hi James,

No, the Akai APC40 doesn’t fit in the Lil Namba Remix.

No UK distributor yet, although we have distribution in Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Czech Republic & Italy. Someone should be able to get you a bag without having to mission it from the States. Check our Resources tab and look under international distributors.

  33. Kevin says:

Hey, thanks for all your prompt replies to folks asking questions. It’s certainly appreciated.

I’m hoping to find space for an Apple MBP 15″, and Akai LPK25, a Novation Launchpad, an external hard drive, a NI Kore 2 controller, and a set of Sennheiser HD580s. Seems unlikely, but I thought I’d post on here and give it a shot. Thanks for your time.

  34. Woody says:

    Hi Kevin,

Yes, all of your gear should fit in a Lil Namba Remix Backpack. If you think you might ever need a larger controller, you could move up to the Big Namba and you have enough gear that it shouldn’t be too loose on you (isn’t there some universal theory about expanding into the given space, or is it that space abhors a vacuum?).

  35. Arthur says:

    Woody,

First off, I want to say that design aesthetic and functionality of your products are second to none.

Following suit with your other posters to see if I can fit my rig. I welcome your input and calculations with trying to fit this all in your larger case however also accept the outcome of impossible.

  36. Frank says:

Hi Woody. Looking for an all-in-one solution and the backpack is the top contender so far.

Wondering if I can fit the following in:

    17″ Macbook
    APC 40
    Monome 256
    Monome 40h
    M-Audio Fast Track Pro AI
    Monitoring Headphones
    USB cables
    Power for Macbook and APC

Thanks for answering all these questions!

  37. Woody says:

    Hi Frank,

You threw us a bit with the Monome products as we were not familiar with them. Can’t find dimensions but it is obvious that your gear would fit and the 40h would easily fit in the front compartment since we can see a photo of it next to a 15″ laptop.

However, it is hard to tell about the 256 size. Even if it does fit, once you add all of the cables, p/s, and Fast Track Pro it is going to be tight. We think you just found the limit to the Big Namba and we would probably advise not trying to stuff the 256 in this bag along with everything else.

  38. Wayne says:

So no luck on the Xone DX or the new Traktor S4?

  39. Chris says:

    Hi Woody,

I see that the APC40 fits in the bag, and the Novation Remote 25SL MKII also fits in the bag, do you know if the two would fit together w/ a 17″ Notebook and audio interface?

    Thanks,
    Chris

  40. Woody says:

    Hi Wayne,

We just checked out the new NI Traktor Kontrol S4 at the DJ Expo. We didn’t get a chance to try to put it in the Big Namba (it was their only one), but from the specs it looks like a really tight fit.

The A&H Xone DX is sorta in the same boat. It appears that it will fit, but we are a bit concerned that the knobs on the front will extend too far.

However, help is on the way in the form of a new bag, called the Juju Magic Bag. It was originally designed for guitar pedalboards but should work with all of these types of dj devices that are just a bit too big to fit in the Big Namba Studio Backpack. Look for more info shortly!

  41. Josh says:

    Hi,

Just wondering, I have a Qosmio laptop that measures 18 x 11.75….will that fit into the laptop compartment? Thanks in advance.

  42. Adrian says:

Hi i have read the reviews, so i know the Novation Xio won’t perfectly fit in the big namba, but if i can still manage to make it get in there with my huge Toshiba Satellite P205-S6307 17″ Laptop,i will definitively buy the bag ‘cos the only bag that i have found so far for the Xio and a big lap is a Novation messenger bag and i would definitively prefer a backpack to travel..a messenger bag just doesn’t seems practical or comfortable to me…i hope you can help me make my decision, thanks

  43. bryan says:

    hi,

ive seen a lot about controllers being able to fit into the big studio bag but what about dj mixers? im using the pioneer djm 400 and would like to know if this will fit alongside 15″ macbook pro and my serato gear. thanks.

  44. Woody says:

Bryan, the depth of 4.5″ of the Pioneer dj mixer means that it will not fit into the backpacks. We’ll see if we can come up with a solution for you.

  49. Noah says:

    Hi there,

Big fan of your gear. OHM64 USERS!! The newest generation of the Ohm 64 will NOT fit in the LilNamba Remix Bag.

The dimensions of the controller seem to suggest that it would, but since the Ohm64 is angled and deeper at the back than the front, it makes it just a bit too tight when wedged in to the main compartment.

So to be clear, technically it will fit, but at the expense of potential damage to the knobs across the top of the controller. Just too close for comfort, in my opinion.

Go for the Big Namba, very confident that it will fit the Ohm64, 15′ MBP, PreSonus Saffire Pro 24 DSP interface, some cans and cabling.

    Thanks!

Hola Woody, ya poseo una Namba Big studio pack, quisiera saber si un korg microkontrol cabe en ella.
la lista de euipo seria asi:

    -macbook 13″ o 15″
    -korg microkontrol?
    -rme fireface 400
    -lacie quadra 1tb hard disk

Hi Woody was hoping you could tell me will the arturia analog experience factory controller (dimensions 48.5cm * 25cm * 6cm) fit into the big namba studio backpack, it seems to be borderline from what I have tried to figure out from other controllers that fit.

  54. Martin says:

Hi Woody just wonderin did you get a chance to figure out if the arturia analogue factory controller fits into the namba big studio.

  55. papi says:

Hello. I want to know which Namba bag will fit the Reloop Digital Jockey 3 controller? It is W-17″ x L-12″ x H-2″. Which of the backpacks do I buy?

  56. Tiny Johnson says:

    Hello. Lovely bag.

My problem is that my ‘laptop’ is not a laptop at all – it is a desktop replacement. So although it is 17inches, it is quite deep – between 5 & 6 cm. It also has a large power pack, about twice the size of most other ones I’ve seen…

So would this bag fit not only the laptop and power pack, but also an SL25 MkII, and an RME Fireface 400, and assorted cables? I have a Mountainsmith which gets it all in, but it’s not accepted by many airlines.

    Yours hopefully,

    Tiny J

  57. Toby Jackson says:

Hi. I sent you a msg weeks ago asking about your bag, my 17 inch laptop, Novation SL25 mkii, RME Fireface 400 & assorted cables for it all. Are you not answering anymore?

  58. Woody says:

Hi Tiny J (Tiny Johnson? Really?)
Frankly it sounds like your gear is to large to fit in the Big Namba Studio Backpack. It would fit in the Juju Magic Bag, but then you’ll have the same issue with carry on that you do currently.

  59. Woody says:

    Hi Toby,

Yes, it sounds like all of your gear should fit in the Big Namba Studio Backpack.

  60. kev says:

Hi, Any chance a DSI Mopho keyboard would fit the the Big Namba?

    18.65″ L x 11.1″ W x 3.6″ H (47.4 cm x 28.2 cm x 9.1 cm)

    Thanks

  61. Woody says:

    Hi Kev,
It’s tight but it should work. Height and width are fine, but we’re a little concerned about the thickness as the Mopho is a bit deeper than other keyboards by almost 1″. Worse case, if it is too thick you wouldn’t be able to use the laptop pouch in the large compartment, but would need to put your laptop in the forward compartment.

  62. Alex Le Doc says:

    Hi Woody,

Do you have any bags that would fit a Numark Mixtrack Pro? A bag for this controller seems pretty hard to find!

    Thanks

  63. Woody says:

    Hi Alex,

The Mixtrack Pro will fit in the Big Namba Studio Backpack (it will be a snug fit but it does fit) as well as the Juju Magic Bag.

  64. Blair says:

    Hi,
Can you please tell me if the Big Namba will fit the following?
    – Dell Inspiron 17r
    Width : 418.4 mm (16.50”)
    Depth : 286.8 mm (11.30”)
    Height : 31.3 – 35.6 mm (1.23 – 1.40”)
    – M-Audio Axiom Pro 25
    – M-Audio Fast track Ultra
    – Over Ear Headphones
    – power & USB cables etc…
    And an NI Maschine!

If so, will I still be able to use the protective lining for the laptop or do I have to take it out.

    Thanks!!

  65. Woody says:

Yes, it looks like everything should fit. We’ve made a change in the Big Namba Studio laptop area and have gone to a laptop pouch just like the Lil Namba Remix, so there is nothing to pull out. Because of the thickness of the Dell, you might have to put the laptop in the front compartment instead of using the laptop pouch. If so, we think you can put the NI Maschine in the laptop pouch.

I’m wondering if everything i have will fit. I know a DN MC6000 will fit in the main compartment. Will I be able to fit a Macbook pro ( 15 or 17) inch and a AKAI APC40 in the secondary compartment all at the same time?

This would be absolutely perfect for me to travel with.

    Thanks!

  70. Charles says:

I saw some one else ask this earlier but I don’t see the response. Will this bag fit the Traktor s4?

  71. Woody says:

    Hi Charles,
No, the Traktor s4 is about 1 inch too big for the Big Namba although it will fit in the Juju Magic Bag. We believe that NI has a bag for the s4 as well.

  72. Robert says:

    Hi,

Another will this fit question, saw it listed earlier but didn’t see the reply.
    Here goes:
    MBP 13
    Axiom 25
    Maschine
    Crane Stand Pro
    Headphones
    Some cables
Motu Ultralite or Focusrite Saffire (switch off between them. Don’t need to pack both, just one)
    Small hard drive

    Thanks,
    Robert

Big Namba or Lil Namba … Traktor Kontrol s2

  75. Dylan W. says:

    How about an Arturia MiniBrute?
    Instrument size : 325 x 390 x70 mm (12.79 x 15.35 x 2.76 inch)
    Instrument weight : 4 kg (8.8 lbs)
    Thanks!

  76. Ronnie says:

    Hi,
I would like to fit in the following:
MacBookPro 15 (May 2011) in Phillips protective zipped case (and plug).
Denon MC3000 with decksaver cover (and plug).
    Numark laptop stand
    Sennheiser HD25-C II headphones
USB cables, XLR cables, RCA cables.
multi-USB plug with usb cables for charging multiple devices
    5 plug power strip.

This is the regular stuff but the problem is the carrying of additional gear that I have to take in a second bag at the moment:

    Panasonic GH2 camera
    Batteries/charger.
    Panasonic f2.5 14mm lens
    Nokton Voigtlander f0.95 25mm lens
    Samyang f3.5 7.5mm lens
    A small video light.

The lenses are relatively small… and from time to time I will need to take a chest support which folds up quite well. I don’t expect to be able to fit my big professional lens.. f1.7 8.5-115mm zoom lens.

  77. Fred Baer says:

What about…. Macbook Pro 15″ (May2011) and a Novation MIniNova? I also have a launchpad and a trigger finger.

Probably wont fit it all, but the Mininova and macbook pro are key.

    Thanks!

    • Woody says:

Hi Fred, the MiniNova is just a bit too large to fit in the Big Namba Studio Backpack. However we are in manufacture of an even larger backpack called the XXL Roadpack which your MiniNova (and everything else) should fit in comfortably. We anticipate release in late May / early June.

  78. Philip says:

Hi I just got the denon mc 6000mk2 I was wondering if this bag can hold it I have the remix bag for a smaller controller and I love it so would really like to add this one to the family.

    Thabk you in advance

    • Woody says:

Looks like the Denon is about 18 inches x 11 inches x 2 inches. Great fit for the Big Namba Studio Backpack. We will add it to our list!
